Afterthought Mast Hoops

  • Bamboo of about needed diameter
  • Soldering iron
  • Nail clippers
  • Medium CA

When you forget to put mast hoops on when it would have been easy…..

I got bamboo placemat from a Chinese restaurant.  Take a piece of bamboo about the diameter you need, and scrape any decoration off with a single edge razor blade.  Soak it in water, with maybe a drop of soap to help wet it out.  When flexible…a minute or two, wrap it around a hot soldering iron (carefully, it is hot).  Slide the coil off the iron and you have 5-8 hoops in a spiral.  Simply cut off what you need with nail clippers on a 45  degree angle.  Slip around the mast and use a drop of medium CA.  I used shellac as a finish as the color looks just right.  A 15” length of bamboo yielded about 8 hoops, even on the first try.
